The Kansas City Star's Diane Stafford's Column: Your Job

Are consumer-driven health plans still on a test drive?

Only 4 percent of Americans who have health insurance are covered by "consumer-driven" health plans, the health insurance model that's expected to be the next generation of employment-based coverage.

These health reimbursement or health savings accounts (HRAs and HSAs) are supposed to make employees more aware of the true costs of employer-sponsored health care -- and thus more frugal stewards of their health care dollars.

Five tips to "professionalize" your work-at-home business

Between the 1990 and the 2000 Census, the number of people working at home grew by one third, and it’s expected to be a lot higher in the next population count.

While some tout the joys of toiling in one’s pajamas, there are problems with home-based work environments that are a bit too casual.

Put noisy kids and pets at the top of the list. If you’re trying to establish a professional reputation, it can’t sound like you’re doing business in a day care center or a pet store.

Holiday party outlook: frugal

Low profile. Low budget. That's the outlook for holiday parties at many workplaces this year.

Hard on the heels of Halloween, party planners are looking ahead to the post-Thanksgiving/pre-New Year's period, the traditional time for holiday fetes.

According to an outlook by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, 62 percent of companies will hold office parties this year, down from 77 percent last year. Two years ago, 90 percent had parties.

Here's the very best way to get an interview and a job

After 30 years in the recruiting industry, Dave Flanders believes he’s seen the one sure-fire way to land a job:

Give your resume to 100 relatives, friends, and acquaintances, tell them you’re looking for work, and ask them to keep you in mind.

Usually, Flanders says, a job offer comes before you’ve even distributed all 100 resumes.

He endorses the technique — especially in a period of high unemployment and low hiring — precisely because there are about six job hunters for every advertised job opening.

She Love Me

She never complains. When I’ve had a long stressful day at work, she is always there waiting for me with her beautiful brown eyes. She protects me as though she is ten feet tall, I protect her without ever thinking twice at all.

I really don’t know what I would do with her. She likes to go on long walks in the park. I think it’s because she hates road trips and flying, but she would tell you differently, and that I am lying.

She is always so happy and I wondered how I ever got so lucky. Lately… Continue

Imagination Movers and Shakers

Last night my family and I went to see the ‘Imagination Movers’ at a local theater. If you are not familiar with who they are, then you are probably not a parent of a small child or have yet to experience the thrill of having an ‘Idea Emergency!’ Four ordinary guys from New Orleans with the extraordinary gift to have your kids, and even you dancing in your seat.

The premise around every show is that there will always be a situation that needs imagination. It’s up to us to explore different solu… Continue

The Negative Energy Trap aka (The Net)

It’s real! I almost got sucked into it a few days ago. Lucky for me I had my trusty positive energy inhaler and was forced to use it on many occasions.

Trap #1:
Sometime this week, I want you to wear your favorite sneakers to work….trust me, you’re going to need them. Go stand by that person’s office or cubical that is always dishing out that negative energy. Stand there a few moments and magically you will feel your mood change. Don’t panic! At that precise moment, sprint to the nearest… Continue

Sincerely, You

I miss you, and there’s not a day that goes by, that I don’t think of you.

The long walks in the park, the chatting until dawn, the laughing until we cried.
Remember that day we, then we, how we….oh what a night.

When I close my eyes, I still see your face as clear as day.
I still smell your scent in every way, I just can’t let go even though I pray, that God would take your pain away.

You are contagious, courageous and you make us, all better human beings.
At times it will be surreal, other… Continue

Welcome to All!

One person, one action can make a difference. Stand up and get noticed. Now is not the time to hide .... stand up and say choose me for your open position! Get noticed! **Special thanks to Sara of Peace4 for this find! :)
Missing Jesse Ross - Opiefest IV

Welcome to all! I am the administrator of this site. If you encounter problems while navigating the site or with any individuals, please let me know immediately.

I got into wanting to help job seekers first at Nativity where I ran the career transition group for many years until I moved to the desert southwest. Now that I have returned to the KC area I am now at Sacred Heart (Shawnee) running their job club and I am the administrator of this site, the Kansas City Metro Networking Job Club.

I am so pleased that I've been blessed to once again be able to give back to the KC community that I grew up in, where I can carry on my family's well over 100 year old tradition of giving back to our community [see the book At the River's Bend]. I work a full-time and a part-time job so this is my only way of giving of my time and talent…of carrying on the tradition of giving back and paying forward.

If anyone has a problem with any individual on here who is trying to help the job seekers I ask that you please be grown up and professional by extending the courtesy to address your issue with the person in question FIRST before taking it to a large, open meeting.

Every person who is offering help on here came to me first and asked permission. If you feel I got it wrong then show me the PROOF! I will always question the agendas of the stone throwers over the accused when unprofessional tactics were used to gather and hurl the stones.

Note: It is the responsibility of ALL job seekers who arrange for this free offer with Rope with Hope Job Coaches to check out the job coach's credentials on your own. Kansas City Metro Networking Job Club does not endorse any one coach. Job seekers are professional adults who certainly know how to look into any offer on their own.

Job Club facilitators: Please feel free to start a group on this site and invite your members to join. This way people can go to your Group and see information that pertains only to your club. I have also created our own Group: "KC Area Job Club Facilitators" which is a group just for us .... don't forget to join!

New Members (job seekers): Please feel free to start discussions. If you have questions during your journey to landing a new position you may leave your questions in the "Start a Discussion" area.

For those that have joined our online group, WELCOME!!!! Please note, you do not need to be a member of our onsite group to join the online group.

Each member can build their own page. If you are a job seeker, please treat your page as a resume that potential employers may view. I suggest only placing your email address on your page as a way for anyone to contact you, do not post your address and phone number. Please remember that your future employer or current employer may happen upon this site, please conduct yourself appropriately. Any offensive photos, graphics, music, text, and conversations will be deleted by the facilitator/moderator. Rudeness to others on this site will not be tolerated and the offender will have his/her membership deleted from this group.

If you are not a job seeker but are in a position to hire or simply want to volunteer your time networking with the job seekers, you too may also build your own page. The same rules apply to you as they do to the job seekers: Any offensive photos, graphics, music, text, and conversations will be deleted by the facilitator/moderator. Rudeness to others on this site will not be tolerated and the offender will have his/her membership deleted from this group.

Anyone who is in a position to hire or help network are encouraged to join our online social networking group. We need professionals who can address the online members and/or groups about career transition related topics.

If you know of anyone who is out of work, changing careers, or who may be facing a layoff in the near future, please let them know about the group.

Announcing Sacred Heart’s Job Club:

Our newly formed job club is for networking and support for all those searching for work or seeking to change careers. It is open to all in the Kansas City metro area. For contact information and information about our weekly onsite meetings see:
